Hello First Grade Families!
We are enjoying our last few days of First Grade! Can you believe we are going to be Second Graders? We were busy this past week completing our District Assessments. The children did a great job on their writing and math assessments. Their writing prompt was: Write about something you are good at....We brainstormed, completed our graphic organizers and finished our final copy. Well done boys and girls!
As you know, we had step up day this week! We had the opportunity to meet the Fantastic Second Grade Team, Mrs. Majka and Mrs. Stamos enjoyed having us and are looking forward to a wonderful year. Did you know the Second Graders also are Bucket Fillers?
We also have been very busy using the Smart Board. As a class, we have reviewed our math skills (2-digit addition and subtraction) as well as all of our calendar activities! I am so impressed!
This week we will be finishing up reading assessments and completing our First Grade Memory books. Your child will have a keepsake to remember his/her First Grade year @ The Hoover School!

Hello First Grade Families!
We had an exciting week in First Grade! As you know, we planted pumpkins, zucchini, squash and marigolds. The children had a great time learning how to plant. Mrs. Forrest explained to the children the importance of having plants such as pumpkins at least 5ft. apart when planting. They all had the opportunity to use gardening gloves and gardening tools to plant their very own plant or flower,exciting ! Now that Science is on our minds....we do have a few pupae in our Ladybug Land,hoping for ladybugs this week. If all goes well,we plan to release our ladybugs in The Hoover Garden. Thanks to all who continue to maintain the garden! A special thanks to Mrs. Fiore, she made our beautiful planting sign. Thanks for all your hard work and creativity!
Academically, we began our unit on Fractions. We learned about 1/2 and 1/4. We also made a few literature connections...we enjoyed reading Fraction Fun and Eating Fractions. We also connected our lessons with the Smartboard. This week we will make a hands on fraction model....a pizza! The childen will also write about his/her pizza.
Last week we brainstormed long o words and read nonfiction stories. We continue to focus on re-telling the stories (comprehension skills). Please continue to review @ home. We will read a Mystery this week and work on consonant c,age dge.
Exciting news....a SmartBoard will be mounted to our wall on Thursday,May 27th...Hooray!

Hello First Grade Families!
I hope you all enjoyed your Mother's Day....A special hooray to all of you! We had a fantastic week! As you may have heard, our ladybugs are in the pupae stage .We are crossing our fingers that we observe a few adult ladybugs this week. The children have made a few observations and report what they have seen in their journals. We continue to make many literature and math connections to this unit. The Grouchy Ladybug helped us to review time. We loved The Ladybug Girl, as well as many other nonfiction Ladybug books.
This week we made story kites. In our classroom windows, you can see the kites. The writing is seen on the inside of our windows. Feel free to come and check them out! We focused on Story Title, Characters, Problem and Solution. Great writing Boys and Girls! As a class, we used our retelling cards to retell the stroy of We're Going on a Picnic. Wow! We had the opportunity to "blast off " into the reader's clubhouse of retelling, super job! Our comprehension skills are amazing.....keep up the great work @ home! Next week we will focus on asking questions when we read, as well as the ongoing review on beginning, middle, and end.
Money was on our minds in math this weelk (we will continue to review). The children did a super job learning about the coins through the smartboard, song, movement, and lots of visuals. We also had the opportunity to use our own coin collections to go shopping on Fun Friday. We loved the money boxes..thank you! This was very exciting! As you know, counting on with dimes, nickels and pennies is manageable. We did use the quarter too...the kids caught on quick. The best way to review @ home is with the coins. We will be introducing fractions next week.
On Thursday 5/20 the First Graders will be planting in the Hoover Garden (dress your child appropriately). We plan to plant pumpkins and squash. You never know, maybe when we return in the fall as second graders we will see our very own pumpkin patch? Thanks again to all the families who devoted their time and energy to this garden (Mrs. Jaggers, Mrs. Wozniak, Mrs. George & Mrs. Garnier). We are looking forward to planting!
A special thank you to ALL our First Grade Families for your generosity and kindness throughout Teacher Appreciation Week. The goodies, flowers, chocolate, cards, and more were incredible!
Also, A special HOORAY to one of our First Grade Superstars....MEGAN WOZNIAK. Megan completed the Mother's Day 5K with her Mom. She ran the race in 39minutes. WOW!!! We are very proud of The Wozniak Girls! I would also like to CONGRATULATE all our First Grade Superstars involved in dance recitals, baseball, karate, lacrosse and gymnastics. We are so proud of all of you for being part of a TEAM!! Good Luck with your season!

Hello First Grade Families!
It was great to see you all at Open House on Tuesday! The children had a great time sharing their work with you. We hope you enjoyed their animal projects, as well as the slide show. It is amazing to see their growth both physically and academically! Great job First Graders! I will be sending home their animal projects next week....enjoy!
We had a busy few weeks finishing up our projects, as well as beginning our end of the year activities. Can you believe the year is coming to an end? It has been a pleasure working alongside your child this year..thank you! We began our reading assessments this week.Your children are excellent readers! Please continue to read over the summer. Talking about books your children are interested in and asking questions is very helpful. Who are the characters in the story? Where did the story take place? What was the problem (if any) in the story? etc. Have Fun! The children had a great time reading plays....Flake, The Missing Hamster was a favorite. We will be reading more fantasy next week and talking about problem and solution.
Mathematically, the children did a great job with telling time to the hour and half hour. We did a few activities on the smartboard telling time both ways...digital and analog. Please practice @ home. We will continue to review time next week, especially the hour and minute hand. We will also be introduced to coins. If you have an altoid cannister hanging around, please feel free to send it in. We will be using coins to make change etc. This concept can be very challenging for our young minds, but we are ready to explore with as many hands on activities as we can. Let the counting coins begin! We will be making many literature connections to money as well.
Ladybugs,ladybugs! We are learning so much about these insects! Did you know ladybugs hibernate in the bark of a tree? I am sure your child can label a few parts of a ladybug. The facts we brainstormed were great! We made two observations this week. Right now, our ladybugs are in the larvae stage. We may have two pupae.?They are growing! In about a week or so we should have adult ladybugs.....fingers crossed. Like all scientists, we know this is an experiment!

Hello First Grade Families!
Spring is in the air! The first graders had a wonderful week. I am pleased to report our Animal Books are off to a great start! Great job boys and girls! Please continue to praise your child @ home for his/her terrific writing and researching skills. This week we chose our animals, worked on graphic organizers, made sloppy copies, and began our final copies....Wow! As many of you know, the book will have 4 main focus pages what the animal looks like? what it eats? where it lives? and what it fears? Your children are very engaged with this project. They are eager to find information. PLease continue to encourage this hands on project @ home. The connections we can make together are endless. Next week we will focus on our final copies, as well as an animal poem,dedication page and our cover page. We will also be making our animal out of model magic, so please keep that in mind when you are at Michaels ,Target or A.C. Moore. A special thank you to all of our parents and family friends for their support and guidance throughout this project. Keep up the great parenting!
In literacy this week we started reading Ways People Live (nonfiction). We brainstormed the different ways people live (climate, clothes, food). We will continue this unit next week. We will review nonfiction books in reading groups and adjectives as a whole class.
The first graders completed the Solid Figures unit. We will be moving on....closed and open figures, as well as positioning words. Please continue to review right and left , beside, and on top of at home with your child. We will be reading It Looked like Spilt Milk and discuss symmetry. I am sure your child will know what a line of symmetry is by the end of the week.
I am also excited to share... we will be taking our passports and off to the cultural festival we go on Thursday, April 15th. We briefly have discussed the different countries we will be visiting (Columbia, Uruguay, Sweden, China) Very exciting! We also talked about where we live and used our map skills to find North America.
Science will be on our minds when we return from vacation. Ladybugs have been ordered and the gardening will begin. We are looking forward to planting at our very own Hoover Garden. Great work and dedication Mrs. Jaggers, Mrs. Wozniak, Mrs. Garnier and friends! Hooray for you!

Hello First Grade Families!
What a fun week we had! The highlight of our week was of course our Opening Day celebration. A special thank you to The Hitchman Family.....we loved the hot dog/sausage stand! The balloons, hot dogs, burgers, servers, dessert and perfect weather were all fantastic!Thank you to the Casey Family for the delicious Spring dessert, yummy! What a great first grade memory! The Red Sox sure do have a lot of fans...the shirts, hats and sweatshirts looked awesome! Thanks for participating!
In the classroom this week the children were busy learning all about describing words. I am sure your child may share with you what an adjective is? We also read a folktake called Little Rabbit's Tale. The children also worked on a writing assignment this week. They chose a noun and had to describe what they wrote about. I then had a short writing conference with each child to talk about their writing. Great job boys and girls!
Mathematically, We started our unit on solid figures and plane shapes. The kids are having a great time using many hands-on objects to determine different shapes. We had many math centers. The children used objects to see if the shape would roll, stack, or slide. We also learned about the sides and vertices of shapes. The children were able to draw a building using different shapes...they loved this center! Next week we will continue with this unit. The children will be using pattern blocks to make a model using different shapes. Please continue to encourage @ home!

Hello First Grade Families!
Happy Spring to all! The students have been keeping track of all of our lamb and lion days. It looks like March will go out like a lion. We will see if our prediction is correct. March has been a busy month academically. We finished Theme 4 in Storytown and will be moving on to Theme 5...Where We Live. In literacy, we continue to review Characters, Setting, Beginning, Middle, and End. We will also be talking about cause and effect, as well as problem and solution. These are skills that will be reviewed throughout the year and focused on in our reading groups. The children have been doing a terrific job retelling the stories we have read. Keep up the great work!
It was wonderful to have Mrs. Senier come in and share a literacy activity with us. She read There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick. The extension activity was super! The children did a think,pair & share to retell the story using story props (provided by Mrs. Senier). They also re-read the story in a pocket chart. It was a wonderful hands on activity, As you may remember, your child brought home a chick, egg, straw,candy, etc. I am sure they can retell the story @ home. Thank you Mrs. Senier for sharing your talent of teaching with us!
I have been very impressed with our reading and writing development. To Welcome Spring The children created a Spring acrostic poem. The ideas were great...some children mentioned Playing outside, flowers growing and ice cream at Socs,yum! These poems are displayed outside our classroom.
Mathematically, we continue to review our facts to 12. The children have been creating fact families to 12 and beyond, as well as working with dominoes to make fact families. We also have been working in groups to solve problems. The children have been identifying key words in problems to help them complete the number sentence...how many in all? how many are left? how many join? Great job boys nad girls! They continue to enjoy different math games introduced. Let's Make a Bunny is a popular choice! This week we will be working on solid figures and plane shapes. We will be making many math connections to literature. Our first book we will read is called The Greedy Triangle. The story talks about a triangle who is just not happy being a triangle, so he visits the shape shifter and makes many requests to become a
different shape.
Please stay tuned for news about Opening Day. The Kindergarten and First Grade will be celebrating Opening Day this Thursday April 1st, 2010. We are looking forward to seeing all our Red Sox fans in their favorite Red Sox attire. Thank you in advance to the Hitchman Family for providing hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as the hot dog stand we have seen on Yawkey Way! We are so lucky!
