Hello Parents!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! The first graders had a super week celebrating Dr. Seuss' 106th Birthday. Mrs. Ruth Clay was our community reader. She talked to us about the importance of health and wellness. Mrs. Clay works at the City Hall. The children made a book thanking her for the books she read...My Garden and Harry the Dirty Dog (both books were donated to the library) Thank you! We also made Dr. Seuss hats out of model magic, as well as creating our own class book And to think that I Saw it at Hoover School. We made many connections to Dr. Seuss' first book And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry St. We hope you enjoyed seeing your child's page sent home. Great job boys and girls!

We are also moving along in reading. This week we learned about a biography. Ask your child if they know what a biography is? We read about Tomas Rivera. We also talked about the sequence in a story...what comes first, next, then and last. Please review this at home when you are reading with your child. Also, our phonics skill was introducing digraphs qu and wh. The kids had lots of fun decorating qu crowns. We had a friendship ceremony and spoke about how q and u are very good friends, even when they quarrel they apologize and stay friends. We hope you enjoyed hearing about qu at home. Very exciting!

The children have been working hard learning all about odd and even numbers, as well as finding number patterns on a hundred chart. You can review this @ home too. Skip counting is always fun! Miss. Torrey showed us many number patterns on the smartboard. We had fun splatting many different colors of paint on each number pattern. The kids were also introduced to a new math game this week called A Snail's Pace. It is great to see them working so well with their peers. We will be moving on this week, practicing our addition and subtraction facts to 12 (ordinal numbers and using a number line). Practice, practice!

We are looking forward to many more "lamb" days ahead...Enjoy your week!
